The Fleeting Fineness of Flowers Down

Double ruffled tulips are fine examples of the under rated ephemera of fading flowers, they have a wabi-sabi all their own, here the tulips’ touch down reframes their faux Kutani-ware Wedgewood vase - itself a floral fiat of form and pattern. It’s easy to forget, or maybe not realise, that like turning the heel for a sock, the ocean knits itself around corners into bays, here the north eastern edge of North Stradbroke shows precisely how the sea can be in two minds about flow and crimp and flat where the Pacific meets Moreton Bay. Crow Bones and Green Grass - A Whitmanesque Curiosity

Crows have been dropping clean-picked bones into my garden. Spying this possibly macabre undoing of the buried, naturally brings to mind Walt Whatman’s Leaves of Grass. While it’s unlikely the earth has extruded what seems to be a duck femur, the ground is supersaturated and seven eighths mud after so many weeks of rain, anything, bone or water is unlikely to be swallowed up. Some years back Bart Brassica did some interesting work on Crop Triangles, by crossing corn with Marzipan, though later Granny Egg called in the FBI considering what she called Marxipan was a danger to voters everywhere. Unfettered, Bart always on the look out for a new super food to flog on Farmgate Fridays, has been experimenting with two varieties of Giant Marzipanised Fennel, and finding no enthusiasm to the more obvious nomenclatures Fennel-Pan or Marzi-Fenn, has hit upon calling them Fennel-culi and Fennel-cula, claiming these names are more tuneful, important for the Singing Sales Pitch traditional to Farmgate Friday. Colours like Compounded Evening Dust

It is not as if this swathe of flowers, or might that collective be a swoon of roses, glimpsed through a doorway, is not enough in itself to give one pause, but there is something else here- the grainy light, the sense of dusk and shadows merging, the setting sun’s surge of colour that this early morning tableau paradoxically evokes, but more potently, in considering this scene, it is that the temporality of lovely things that cannot last is not in any way mournful, but that not to notice, not to to look closely, would be.
